![]() President-ElectShannon Croft---214-731-9274 Many thanks to all of you for electing me as next year's Carrollton Early Childhood PTA President. I'm looking forward to an exciting and challenging 2002-2003 year for CECPTA. Although the CECPTA does not meet during the summer we still have activities going on. The officers and chairmen will meet to make plans for a bigger and even better year for CECPTA My head is already spinning with ideas! Incoming chairmen and officer training is May 15th at Newman Smith High School. There will be a low cost dinner and free childcare. Please see the flyer included in this issue of the newsletter for more details. All incoming board members should really try to attend. The following is an exerpt of an article taken from the Carrollton Preschool PTA in 1988. It is an interesting read and gives us a greater appreciation of the history of our organization! History of PPTA 1967-1977 --- by Kate Yarborough Although this period was one of unrest for our nation, it appeared that parenting concerns were similar to those of today. Mothers were interested in children's behaviour, health, safety, education, and happiness as was illustrated by some of the following program topics: "Importance of Children's Books" - (September 1978) **** "Safety in Childrens Toys" - (March 1973) **** "Poison Control with the Preschooler" - (March 1974) **** "Early Recognition of Learning Disabilites" - (September 1975) Concern with national issues was demonstrated by programs such as, "Protecting our Environment is Everyone's Business" (April 1972). In December 1969, PPTA members sent Christmas cards to servicemen in Vietnam. Mothers were also interested in their own well being. "Problems of Nervous Mothers" (September 1974) and "Cancer in Children and Women" (November 1972) were two programs designed to address women's health. The main fundraiser during the period was PPTA participation in Pioneer Days, an annual event held in Farmers Branch. It included booths, rides, a baby beauty contest (sponsered by PPTA), floats and various contests. PPTA moms met before the big event and actually spent a day squeezing lemons for real lemonade for their booth! Other fundraisers included involvement in school carnivals and bake sales. "Coke Parties" were all the rage during this time. A Mr. Pibb truck and Thomas Park provided a needed outing for moms and tots. It wasn't until the late 1970's that a babysitting co-op was organized. Playgroups were non-existent. Halloween and Christmas parties were standared events from year to year. Community Service projects included sponsering an eye and ear screening and testing clinic, sponsoring a needy family and supporting a polio clinic. With no babysitting co-op, playgroups, parent ed seminars and limited socials, PPTA members really looked forward to the monthly meetings where mothers could "dress up" and socialize with one another (sans children). Incidentally, no babysitters were hired for the monthly meeting - mothers volunteered (or were recruited) to babysit! Fathers did not participate in any events (parties, meetings, etc.). CECPTA sure has changed since then! |
